About the Abortion Pill

The Abortion Pill (also called Mifeprex, Mifepristone, or RU-486) provides women with a medical alternative to surgical abortion.

  • Mifepristone, in conjunction with misoprostol (also called Cytotec) was approved for use as an abortifacient by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on September 28, 2000.
  • This antiprogesterone drug blocks receptors of progesterone, a key hormone in the establishment and maintenance of human pregnancy.
  • Mifepristone induces spontaneous abortion when administered in early pregnancy and followed by a dose of misoprostol, a prostaglandin.

How the Abortion Pill Works

The Abortion Pill procedure involves the oral ingestion of mifepristone after ultrasound verification of a pregnancy ten weeks gestation or less. 24 to 48 hours later, misoprostol is inserted into the cheeks, held in place for 30 minutes, and then swallowed with water. In most cases, a miscarriage occurs within 24 hours.

If bleeding does not occur after 24 hours, the Misoprostol insertion is repeated or a surgical procedure can be performed if you prefer. Usually bleeding is like a spontaneous miscarriage and bleeding or spotting may occur for up to two weeks or longer. An ultrasound will be used to verify the successful termination of the pregnancy.

About First Trimester Abortion

A first trimester abortion, or a D&C, is performed up to 13.6 weeks of pregnancy, and is a vacuum aspiration procedure. You can choose to be awake or asleep for the procedure, which lasts approximately 5-7 minutes.

The fee for this procedure includes pregnancy testing, admitting, pre-operative history and physical, ultrasound, lab work, the D&C procedure, RhoGAM or MicRhoGAM (if required), medications given on the day of the procedure, post-operative medications and your post-operative care as authorized by us.

About Early Second Trimester Abortion

Early second trimester abortions are generally performed between 14.0 to 15.6 weeks of pregnancy and require only one office visit. We use the dilation and evacuation procedure, also known as a D&E. In the early in the second trimester, we can often use a medication to prepare the cervix instead of osmotic dilators, also called laminaria.

About Second Trimester Abortion

Second trimester abortions are performed between 14.0 to 23.3 weeks of pregnancy and require 1 to 3 day visits. We use the dilation and evacuation procedure, also known as a D&E. After 15 weeks, in most cases, cervical dilators called Laminaria or Dilapan, are inserted into the cervix to gradually dilate it overnight before a doctor performs the procedure. Sometimes, early in the second trimester, we can use a medication to prepare the cervix instead of dilators.
